(Irish Team on the way to Opening Ceremony with from left to right Cadan McCarthy, Coach Mark Craig, Ellen Walsh & Team Manager Mary Dunne)

Cadan McCarthy agreed to give an insight into what is involved in being part of the Irish Team which competed in Morocco. The team came home with 6 gold, 5 silvers and 2 bronze finished 2nd on the Medal table to Greece. Cadan contributing with a silver in the 200m IM in 2:07.98 and a bronze in the mixed 400m Freestyle Relay. The team of Jack McMillan (51.55), Cadan McCarthy (54.54), Mona McSharry (55.68) and Rebecca Reid (58.75) setting a New Irish Senior Record of 3:40.52. Here is an excerpt of Cadans diary as the competition was about to begin.

On Sun 29th April flew Dublin to Morocco Ryanair. Kitted out in Swim Ireland tracksuits, our team of 8 selected to represent Ireland, and arrived in Marrakech a few days before the official opening - allowed us good time to settle into the schedule and acclimatise.

58 countries represented from schools all over the world giving us opportunities to learn about different cultures through sport. And it’s great to be of part of a multi-sport event where the facilities catering for all the different sporting disciplines are amazing. Weather is beautiful. Food a nice change from the humble spud! mostly chicken, fish or meat with lots of pasta and rice. It’s really hot here so everyone is drinking loads of water to stay well hydrated

Training every day 25m pool in Marrakech with final instructions from our wonderful Irish coaches: Mark & Sinead. Our team manager Mary has all in order.  Irish NPD Jon Rudd and NPSM John Watson supporting us here too.

Fantastic Opening Ceremony on Thursday 3rd May where I was privileged, along with Ellen Walshe, to represent Ireland at the Ceremony.

On to Casablanca for competition time, thanks to NCLs John, Emmet and Cormac for having me in peak condition, whatever is achieved (or not). Sport is about taking the ups with the downs but always striving to be the best.

GO TEAM IRELAND!

Thanks to Cadan for providing us with an insight into being part of the Irish Team. He can be very proud of his achievements and in a team that certainly wore the shamrock with pride in Casablanca.
